Video Library

Here is an ever-expanding library of free videos, covering some miscellaneous "hacks" I've found to make playing easier.

Advanced Concepts - Orchestration (For Funk, Gospel, and Jazz)

Ever wonder what great drummers do in the practice room that's different from what you do? It's the same reason you're good at video games. They're good at isolating only the scenarios they need to rehearse, and going deep. An essential component of that is this Theme and Variations exercise. For more info, check out the Faster Hands series.

Advanced Concepts - Berklee Chops Shed and Transcription (Gospel)

The Berklee Chops Shed, from 2010, is one of the most covered drum tracks on the web. In this video I transcribe the first 90 seconds, isolate a specific lick from Darion Ja'Von, take it apart to figure out what he practiced, then re-synthesize it into something that's my own. Finally, I play my own solo along with the Berklee Chops Shed.

Jazz - How to (Really) Play Brushes, Part 1

In this video I break down a ballad pattern from one of the only truly useful brush instructional videos - Ed Soph's - and reconstruct it step-by-step.

Advanced Concepts - Darion Ja'von Transcription (Gospel and Funk)

I made this video by-request. Darion Ja'von is one of the brightest "rising stars" in drumming. He appeared on Gospel Chops in 2010, in this video. At the request of several commenters, I transcribed the first minute of Darion's performance, and made this video to play it slowly, and also to break down some of the concepts behind his style.
